FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
| Q: |
How much money does the Foundation hope to raise? |
| A: | The goal for 2008-2009 is $100,000. This, along with our 24 Hour Soccer Marathon, will cover approximately 50% of estimated financial aid costs for 08-09. We hope to raise $25,000 of the goal specifically from teh campaign. |
| Q: | That seems like a lot of money, is it a reasonable goal? |
| A: | We think it’s a reasonable goal. The Champions Foundation Fundraiser has a goal of $25,000 which equates to around $16 in giving per Lonestar family. Additionally, the 24 Hour Soccer Marathon is expected to raise additional funds, allowing us to achieve the $100,000 goal. |
| Q: | Who do you plan to raise money from? |
| A: | The friends, family and partners that surround the Lonestar Soccer Club. |
| Q: | What is this money used for? |
| A: | Financial Aid awards to qualifying Lonestar families to offset the costs of fees. |
| Q: | How many players are receiving some form of financial aid? |
| A: | The estimate for the 2008-2009 season is 190 players. |
| Q: | How does a family apply for financial aid? |
| A: | Annually, before tryouts, Lonestar activates a link on the website that provides the necessary documents that parents must complete to apply for financial aid. The forms are also available at tryouts for those who do not have access to a computer. Applications are accepted from returning Lonestar families a few weeks prior to tryouts. |
| Q: | Who decides who gets financial aid? |
| A: | The Financial Assistance Committee that operates under the Lonestar Board of Directors. Lonestars utilizes the National Poverty guidelines published by the US Department of Health & Human Services as a tool in the formula that considers total income and number of dependents. Lonestar applies these calculations to the number of applications and awards are made accordingly. Everyone who applies is not guaranteed an award. Beginning with applications for assistance for the fall 2008 season, a copy of the most recent income tax submission will be required for any award consideration. |
| Q: | Is financial aid used to “recruit” players based on their soccer skills? |
| A: | The criterion for financial aid is strictly based on economic need and is awarded independent of “skill” level. We have players on Premier, D1, S2 and D2 teams receiving aid. |
| Q: | How do I know my donation is being used for financial aid and not for other things? |
| A: | Your donation goes directly into a separate Champions Foundation account. The only way funds move from the Foundation account to the main Lonestars account is with documented financial aid paperwork. |
| Q: | Is this campaign a “one time” thing or does the club plan to raise this money every year? |
| A: | This is an ongoing need. |
| Q: | How much of the money raised goes to financial aid vs. administrative costs? |
| A: | There are some costs in running the underwriting campaign (postage, paper, web, credit card fees, etc). We estimate about 95-97% of the money donated will be directed for financial aid. |
| Q: | Can I direct my donation for a specific program (i.e. girls, boys, or certain ages)? |
| A: | Not currently. Flexibility is the key to the Foundation. Each year demographics change and needs change. We think it’s wise to give flexibility to the Foundation leadership and the Financial Assistance Committee to distribute financial aid based on need. |
| Q: | My company has a policy allowing it to match employee donations to certain charities. How do I take advantage of this opportunity? |
| A: | The Champions Foundation will provide you with a receipt of your donation for tax purposes. You should check with your company’s human resources department to see if your donation qualifies for corporate matching. |
