In Memory of Chris Martin

In Memory of Chris Martin, Longhorns '97... Thank You to Todd Moseley, Matt Prewett and many others for this wonderful gesture in memory of Chris. Chris is #13 in the picture, to the left of the guy in the blue hat as you look at the picture. You may also recognize a young aspiring coach.

Chris Martin grew up in Austin, TX, where he began his relationship with the game of soccer and the lifelong friends he made during that time. As a young man he attended Westwood High School where he played alongside teammates whom he was formerly united with through the Longhorn Soccer Club. Among those teammates was neighborhood friend Todd Moseley, whom Chris had known since the age of five. Their mutual love for the game would cement their bond and over the years the boys were able to experience a higher level of competition, team camaraderie, and the opportunity to travel the states through their participation in the soccer league. They both went on to play college level soccer at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor, and after graduation continued playing with the Austin Men’s Soccer Association.

Sadly, just shy of his 30th birthday, Chris passed away unexpectedly. His soccer legacy, combined with many memories from close friends and family would, however, survive. Therefore, years later when the Westwood High Class of 1997 began to plan their fifteen-year reunion, Todd and his classmates, who included former Westwood and Longhorn teammate Matt Prewett, wanted to find a way to honor Chris' memory. His early years of playing with the Longhorn Soccer Club came to mind. That organization no longer exists today, so the search for similar clubs offering kids the opportunity to explore their talent at a highly competitive level began.

The Lonestar Soccer Club fit the bill. They provide top notch coaching from around the world and their program offers a sense of symmetry with the boy's history together; Chris and Todd's final coach while playing with the Longhorn organization was Steve Bailey, who is now a director with the Lonestar Soccer Club. The decision was made; the Westwood Class of 1997 donation would be given to the Lonestar's Financial Assistance Program in honor and memory of Chris Martin. With this donation and others, many kids who have both the talent and drive to play competitive soccer will be able to receive the opportunity that was given to Chris and many of his colleagues, friends, buddies, and adversaries.
