Pink Out the Pitch weekend looks great out on the soccer field. It’s time for all players, parents and coaches to get out our pink ribbons, shirts & socks to bring awareness to breast cancer, encourage mammograms, and celebrate survivors. Pretty in pink, right?
While wearing pink in October does bring continued awareness to the serious disease, breast cancer, far too many still don’t realize that metastatic or stage IV breast cancer is what causes nearly 40,000 yearly breast cancer deaths in the United States. The reality isn't so pink - it isn't pretty. Only 2-5% of research dollars for breast cancer target late-stage disease.
And yet, over the past 20 years, we’ve made great strides. Recently the American Cancer Society reported a 40% decrease in breast cancer deaths between 1989 and 2015, likely attributed to the pink-ribbon-driven increase in early detection and better treatments - this is worthy of celebration.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lonestar has partnered with the local organization, Team Tiara, to remind everyone staying healthy & staying active is the best way to combat the disease. Team Tiara is a local group who continues to actively seek out ways to promote Breast Cancer Awareness, fund research and support Survivors. This year we have raised $20,000 from Lonestar Pink Out the Pitch t-shirts, and all proceeds will be allocated to support Metastatic Breast Cancer Research through Team Tiara.
As you reach for your pink shirt, socks, or any item in support of this cause, Team Tiara asks you to keep in mind two things:
1. "Pinktober" is 365 days of the year. Remember that this disease is active all year and help is always needed around those impacted directly & their family members.
2. Think before you Pink. Every organization is different, so when when making a purchase to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness or Research, do research by searching for reputable charities:
